The laptop has an nVidia G84GLM Quadro FX 1600M running the nVidia 340 driver.
The desktop has an onboard nvidia controller but it reads as an i915
and is running the i915 driver (nvidia does not recognize this card).
The work desktop is running an nvidia card (not sure which one - I can
verify tomorrw) with the nvidia 367 driver.
Footnote: the laptop seems to have this problem now mainly when the
cover is closed for an extended period of time, like overnight. It
has been behaving fine all day today.
