Can't boot 14.04

I did not upgrade to 14.04 it was a fresh install. By up grade you men 
what I did to get in this mess, the software manager presented me with 
updates and I let it install them.

My memory is not clean on this but at one time I had nvidia driver 
340.xxx installed. I don't remember if it was done by fresh install or I 
did it for some reason. It did not work so I went with the 304.131 
driver which worked. The 304.131 driver was the driver used by 12.04 on 
this same machine.

I am somewhat reluctant to drop that far back.
