Hi,
you first need to find out the cause. Since you could access the 14.04
install by a 12.04 session, take a look at the log files.
If you suspect that the graphics driver does cause the trouble, start
taking a look at the X log file and since it happens when logging in,
take a look at the display manager's log files, starting with the
greeter. Maybe the display manager is lightdm.
$ sudo -i
# grep EE /mount/point/var/log/Xorg.0.log
# less /mount/point/var/log/Xorg.0.log
# less /mount/point/var/log/lightdm/<some_log_file>
