AFAIK I could install gksudo (on 16.10), the question was really should I? it
seems (to me at least) that if it is important it would have been in the basic
install?

IIRC it is on my Ubuntu 16.04 box(s) but they where mostly upgraded from
14.04.4 so it may have been there already?

If I have to google info (usually to AskUbuntu) on doing something in ubuntu
for some reason I have just copy-pasted the cmd lines into a terminal window so
I may have used gksudo gedit, the problem showed up here on a new 16.10 box
when I was trying to change workgroup name, so editing

/etc/hostname
/etc/hosts
/etc/samba/smb.conf

or change boot order

/etc/default/grub

this one had the most versions of commands

gksu gedit /etc/default/grub
gksudo gedit /etc/default/grub
sudo gedit /etc/default/grub
