Mate uses the Caja file manager.

I did notice the "Files" application under "regular" Ubuntu seems to list a
huge number of files as "recent." I just dug around and see that it's a
part of Nautilus, so I presume it won't work under Mate. Or if you did,
you'd probably want to run it in a way that doesn't allow it to take over
the desktop. such as

Maybe there's another alternate file manager that shows more "recent files"
than what you're using. I don't use that feature, however, so without
booting another system I can't think whether Thunar, or PCManFM does...

The screenshot for Dolphin in the Software app shows a "recently saved"
section in the sidebar so maybe that's another one to try.
