DVD/BR writers won't recognize certain DVDs

(that means "nothing in syslog, or 'dmesg'?)

Are the DVDs that don't work commercial ones? If so, is there any
correlation between the region code of the disk and whether or not they
read OK? Just wondering whether you might need libdvdcss, though the
symptoms aren't quite right.
