Ok, there is indeed "/etc/init.d/lightdm" regarding

http://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/amd64/lightdm/filelist , but a
default Ubuntu install comes with systemd. The OP claims that it was a
fresh default install.

Is it possible that a command to remove NM, would remove systemd and
install upstart? If so, why did systemctl work? If not, why was the
systemd unit removed and the init.d file wasn't removed?

What's the output of

  ps -p 1

?
