16.04: Graphical login/desktop vanished? (coming closer)

Coming closer now.

It appears the the lightdm package was UNINSTALLED when my automatic
configuration scripts issued the command:

  aptitude -y -q remove network-manager

/var/log/aptitude states that at this operation, 591 packages were
removed. All of them marked with:

  [REMOVE, NOT USED] <packagename>

To be honest, I am VERY surprised that uninstalling network-manager will
silently remove the whole desktop environment...
