password restrictions are different in the GUI and on the command line.

   Hallo list.
Using a freshly installed ubuntu 16.04 I noticed that if you set a (too) simple password using
the command "passwd" it is NOT possible to login via lightdm.

This because lightdm seems to enforce the stricter rules that are used when setting a password
using the GUI.
I can live with the stricter rules, but they probably should also be enforced by the
command "passwd". At least in the default installation of that command.

The current situation is confusing.
