if there is an issue with the session you will find the errors in
there ... 

if the issue is before starting the session, the lightdm logs are the
place to look ...

rule of thumb: if ~/.xsession-errors gets written to, you are past the
lightdm bits ... so you can just look at the timestamp of the file after
a failed login to see if the session attempted to start.
