Did you try making a bootable USB stick and boot Ubuntu on the ThinkPad? I
bought a Lenovo E540 (says "Thinkpad" all over it) with Core i7 and 5 Gig
of RAM (I upgraded it to the max RAM which may have been a waste) plus I
put in a SSD. Overall it works really well. It did take some adjustments to
get things acceptable, but I never bothered to boot the Windows versions it
came with. So I cannot compare.

In order to get my trackpad working, I just needed to install one package:

gpointing-device-settings

then used THAT tool to adjust the trackpad. Yours may use a different
trackpad, but maybe it will work for you.

I recommend you try a couple of different releases of Ubuntu in case one
isn't so good -- try Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS (the current stable LTS) and the
latest release 15.10. Also you might try those same releases of Kubuntu to
see if you're more comfortable with it.

If you stick with Ubuntu on the Thinkpad, you may also want to install TLP
(sadly, not available in the Ubuntu repositories) to get decent battery
life. But be forwarned -- it has no graphical interface.

I haven't tried any of the Chromebooks.
