apt-mark uses "/var/lib/dpkg/status" to record a "hold" like dpkg.

Very recent aptitude uses "/var/lib/dpkg/status" too but it uses the
"Dselect-State" field in "/var/lib/aptitude/pkgstates" in 12.04.

synaptic uses "/var/lib/synaptic/preferences" and doesn't mention
"hold" in it; it uses a pinning syntax similar to
"/etc/apt/preferences{,.d/}"
