Progress of sorts. Ubuntu 15.10 gets much further - it boots, though it
issues an error message ("not a COM32R image") and I have to hit Tab and
type "live-install" at the boot: prompt.

Once booted I can install 15.10. The touchpad doesn't work, the
trackpoint doesn't work, and very irritatingly the Intel wifi doesn't
work, but usually such things are a matter of loading other drivers. A
USB mouse works fine. A wifi dongle seems to work fine. Basic graphics
work, at the display's native resolution. It remains to be seen whether
they continue to work. Haven't tried bits and bobs like bluetooth and
sound yet. Haven't tried playing a video.

The reason I haven't tried a lot of things is that after installing
15.10 and rebooting, there is no boot menu - it's as if the only
installed OS is Windows. This seems to be a common problem on zillions
of platforms, so perhaps Uncle Google can help me there.

I tried every boot option I could find including nomodeset, and many
others that I knew for a fact could not possibly help :-) The only one
that got me past the error message was "vga=771", but the result was an
unreadable, unusable lo-res mish-mash. Using 15.10 was the first real
progress.

I think it's working enough, provided I can get dual boot working and
figure out the wifi.

Any helpful clues on getting dual boot working would be gratefully
accepted :-)

Regards, K.
