Non-UEFI limited to 2TB disk?

I just got a second hand desktop, went to put Ubuntu on it, and noticed
in the BIOS that if I disable UEFI, the boot disk is limited to 2TB.

Why is that? It's not a problem for this PC, I'm just curious.
