Get the data off it first with DDrescue:

http://askubuntu.com/questions/211578/whats-the-difference-between-ddrescue-gddrescue-and-dd-rescue

/Then/ run Photorec or whatever on the recovered data.

This protects you from the drive failure getting worse or becoming total.
