 kernel and initrd from  the boot/ dir in your NFS root
 to the tftp dir that is used by PXE ?

Hi again Oliver,

Yes, my thoughts exactly.
I'll try it and let the list know of my findings.

This is REALLY weird; I have an identical installation running on top
of the hardware (no VMs /blades) and the system updates the kernel
successfully.

Oh well. . . . I guest I will have to be more vigilant on updates.
