Well,  it seems I was wrong. 
The system gets as stubborn as a donkey.
In addition to all the hubbub, I discovered that the system
is stuck on kernel v3.x-46 when it should be 3.x-77.
It seems that update manager does not like what is going on
with grub and it froze kernel updates.

Chaps, the way I see it is "unhalt" all grub packaged and see what
happens.

In any case Oli / Ralph thank you.

Ralph I didn't get the chance to thank for that lengthy message you
wrote in regards to circumventing this problem.
To tell you the truth I didn't get the chance of sitting down and
studying your message.
