Hi Jim,

IMO two important statements are:

"Baker notes that it is not clear whether Mozilla will try to spin off
Thunderbird as its own open-source entity, or whether it will seek a
business partner to take over the product"

It's not mentioned that Thunderbird will be discontinued at all, the
Mozilla folks just plan another "business model".

"Mozilla now views any support for Thunderbird, even the limited
support it has been providing for the past three years, as akin to
“paying a tax,” in Baker’s words, on top of the work those engineers
 spend building Firefox."

This Ubuntu mailing list does not drop support and it still will be
free as in beer.

The box on the right side is for Ubuntu:

"This package is not part of any Debian distribution." -
https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/thunderbird

Ubuntu instead provides:

https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/icedove

"Icedove is the Thunderbird email client rebranded by Debian." -
https://wiki.debian.org/Icedove

Since I'm neither a Thunderbird, nor an Icedove user I don't care.
However, Icedove already is a fork available for around ten years.

Regards,
Ralf
