The option is not greyed out if I start a new spreadsheet. The file is 
not read-only.

I don't understand what might cause the option to be greyed out. It's a 
user display option so I can't think of any circumstances where it would 
be sensible to prevent its use. But I've given up trying to understand 
how UI designers think; they're on a different planet to me.
