If you ever want to clean up Nautilus quickly, open a terminal window,
find the Nautilus process ("ps ax | grep nautilus") andthen kill it
("kill xxxx", where "xxxx" is the process ID you found in the first
step). Everything to do with Nautilus will be closed, and all your
desktop icons will disappear :-) but fear not; just start Nautilus from
the launcher and everything will go back to normal.

Well done - now we know :-)

"Files" does indeed take me to the topmost open window. Which is ALWAYS
the first one I opened (of the currently open ones of course). It seems
a bit pointless. I wonder if there is more to it.
