So you have got an install on a HDD with Linux 4.x and you can't
use a live media with Linux 3.x, to take a look at the Linux 4.x
install's log files?

IOW without any information from you, we should guess, too? Or do you
expect us to google for you related to your hardware and 4.x kernel
issues? You even don't provide what Ubuntu release you are using.

Consider to read https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LinuxLogFiles and to
provide more information. However, if you want more guessing, perhaps
cosmic radiation randomly caused issues, all the times you tried to
boot 4.x kernels. Try again and again and again, until this unfortunate
accidents stop and no cosmic radiation by random affects the startup.
