I can't log-in from log-in screen however guest user can

This started yesterday evening. I had been logged into enlightenment
and logged out and went to log into Gnome. When the log-in screen came
up I selected Gnome from my list of Window Managers (the wheel icon is
gone so have to move the mouse around until I find it. I selected
Gnome, entered my password. The screen went black and I waited for it
to start. Nothing happened - I pressed Ctrl-Alt-F1, logged into the
console then startx. After some delay Gnome finally came up. This
afternoon I was hoping somehow it had fixed itself so I logged out,
selected Gnome, and waited. Apparently I waited too long as no matter
what combination of Ctrl-Alt-F* I pressed nothing happened. I had to
SSH into the desktop from my tablet and do a reboot from there. When
the log-in screen came up I selected Gnome, entered PW and right to the
black screen. This time I waited about 30sec and did the Ctrl-Alt-F1,
logged in and ran startx. After a small delay Gnome did come up.
However at no time can I get Enlightenment to come back up. Testing the
'guest' account there are no issues with logging into Gnome or
Enlightenment. I haven't tried the other WMs I have with the guest
account

aptitude search '~i~Px-window-manager'
i   blackbox        - Window manager for X
i   cinnamon        - Innovative and comfortable desktop
i   compiz          - OpenGL window and compositing manager
i   e17             - Enlightenment DR17 Window Manager
i A metacity        - lightweight GTK+ window manager
i A muffin          - lightweight window and compositing manager
i A mutter          - lightweight GTK+ window manager
i A openbox         - standards-compliant, fast, light-weight an
i   oroborus        - A lightweight themeable windowmanager for
i A pekwm           - very light window manager
i A xfwm4           - window manager of the Xfce project

Bottom line, some file (I guess) somewhere is messed up that will not
allow me to log in normally but will let the guest account do so.
