Which is exactly what I just did, and surprise, surprise, it produces a
letterbox screen full of random coloured gibberish just like the MATE
version did. That's not very good for what is supposed to be a
professional distribution, is it?
To check that it's not Virtualbox that's at fault, I just used it to
boot the Linux Mint 18 installer. It booted properly, produced a nice
desktop display with an "Install" icon, which I clicked, and it's now
installing what I expect to be a fully operational VM.
Looks to me like the Mint developers are most probably the people who
actually know what they're doing.
