I still wonder what error messages the OP gets if running

sudo apt update && sudo gdebi virtualbox-5.1_5.1.4-110228~Ubuntu~xenial_amd64deb

or

sudo apt update && sudo dpkg -i --force-depends virtualbox-5.1_5.1.4-110228~Ubuntu~xenial_amd64deb && sudo apt-get -f install

Perhaps much better:

"Add the following line to your /etc/apt/sources.list:

deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian xenial contrib

[...]

registering:

wget -q https://www.virtualbox.org/download/oracle_vbox_2016.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add -

[...]

To install VirtualBox, do

" -https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads

sudo apt update
sudo apt install dkms virtualbox-5.1
