Upgrading to 16.04

I normally use whatever is in the repository for the release. This is
5.04-dfsg-0ubuntu1.16.04.1.

This does not let me print or scan. When I run Epson scan in the virtual
machine it shows the scanner, but when I select it it says Epsom Scan
cannot be started. When I try to use a usb printer, it allows me to
select the printer but when I try to print it says USB printer status is
not available or the document failed to print

I can use the scanners and printers directly from Ubuntu with no problem
but not from the Virtual machine.

I tried to download and install VirtualBox 5.1 from
https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_downloads.

This download will not install. It stops within about 10 seconds. If it
produces an error log I have no idea where to look for it.

While I would like to get the usb devices working from within Virtual
Box, I can get by because all of may data files are stored in my linux
home directory. The virtual box is used only to store windows program
files.
