Hello fellow users,
I am a relatively new Linux and Kubuntu user. I am seeking a detailed
guide on how Kubuntu 14 starts and what configuration files are
referenced in an "out-of-the-box" installation before any system
administration packages get added.
For instance, what is the default, running on "bare metal" method that
process 0 spawns all the other processes on the system? When does
each "basic" service come up? By basic I mean how does the system
proceed through each run-level, when do disk checks start, when does
networking start, what starts networking, etc.
I get a little confused when dealing with init because there seems to
be two init services. I'm not complaining. I'm sure this is very
useful and I would like to understand how it works from the "ground up".
I have a similar problem with networking. I have specified that
Network Manager should not manage any interfaces but when I do a "ps
aux | grep network" lo and behold I see that the dhclient has called
NetworkManager. That's fine because networking works great. Now I
want to know how and why :-)
If someone could point me to some good documentation on this I would
be very appreciative. I have found some documentation (obviously
since I have a working system with a broadcom wireless adapter ;-) )
but I find there are a lot of details glossed over and a lot of hand
waving going on.
Thanks in advance for any pointers.
Best Regards,
Duane
