Only somebody experienced with PHP should answer question 2, so it's
not me.

Assumed there should be soname issues, you could compile the old source
package against the new libs, but since I have no knowledge about PHP
I'm not aware of possible pitfalls.

Internet search engines could help to find a third party repository,
but this not necessarily means that they will provide good packages, let
alone that packages might cause issues in the future or such a
repository might never provide security related upgrades.
