Opening new terminal in tab/window

Hello,

I am looking for a menu-entry and/or key-stroke to create a new tab in
gnome-terminal.

In the settings dialog, there is the option

   Open new terminal

where I can choose between "Tab" and "Window".

But I want to sometimes open in "Tab" and sometimes in "Window".

In older ubuntu versions, there were two menu entries: one for opening in Tab
and one for opening in Window.

In 16.04, there is only one menu entry left, and it opens according the
setting in the "settings" menu.

How can I get the old behavior back?
