Surely it's called X, the basis of the display system on Linux (and
other Unix systems since the year dot).

Your display is the X server, the programs you use are the X clients.
The clients can run on machines remote from the server.

Unfortunately X seems to have been forgotten somewhat, programs that
use DBus and such to communicate break X.  However many programs still
work well with X.  For example I quite frequently use synaptic on
headless systems with it displaying on my dekstop machine.
