Thunderbird email not working in ubuntu 14.04

The port settings are the default ones:

POP 995

SMTP 465

I now wonder if it is a (rare) virus infection

What is the best Antivirus for Ubuntu 14,04?

I have Ubuntu 14.04 linux installed on a Dell Inspiron 660.

It has both Thunderbird Mail and Claws Mail installed but I cannot send or
receive emails.

*Starting* *Thunderbird* gives:

login to server pop.verizon.net failed.

Enter new password (no new password works)

With* get messages:*

Error with account dfp10 at verizon.net

Sending of user name did not succeed

Mail server pop.verizon.net responded: [AUTH]

Authentication failed.


*Claws Mail* starts normally

Sending an email:

Claws Mail needs network access in order to send this email

You're working off line. Override? Yes

Error

An error happened during SMTP session.

Use “Send queued messages” from the main window to retry.
