I followed your suggestion of looking in the old apt logs. I unzipped 
them and searched on nvidia in gedit.

I didn't either until I put it there.  I don't know if it was there and 
got erased with my screwup or not. I just checked the laptop I had to 
use to get my desktop up and running and it is running 14.04 and has no 
xorg.conf.

I think I remember reading some time ago that it is not used by default 
anymore but you can put one there if you want.  But then, my memory is 
not that good anymore.
