Then cover your arse. Make sure you have management approval for what
you are doing. Preferably in writing.

Packages that are integral to your operation and that are not properly
packaged for your distro HAVE to be obtained, installed and configured
manually. There's no way around it. If you make sure that the versions
you use are documented, that the build and install processes are
documented, and even better if you can encapsulate the installation in
something like puppet, then you can make yourself largely immune from
OS updates.
