IIUC booting still works, just the splash screen is missing?
This not necessarily is related to the issues you experience for user
sessions.

Do you experience issues, if you run a session as guest?

Are there issues if you run a session for a new created user?

Are there issues if you run a session without using a GUI, but while X
and your WM are running? IOW if you use command line by Ctrl + Alt + Fx.

Does X report errors?
  $ grep EE /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Does .xsession-errors report issues for the apps that misbehave?
  $ less ~/.xsession-errors
Don't care about WARNING, CRITICAL, if it has got nothing to do that is
related to apps that go berserk.

Are you using any third party software? E.g. from a PPA, packages build
by yourself? IOW is it a clean Ubuntu install, based on the official
repositories?
