Set up a bootable USB stick (or DVD). Boot the system off that, and you
should be able to mount the hard disk and transfer anything you like off
it. If you can't even mount the disk, it's a different problem and
harder to solve.

The other thing you can do is take out the hard disk, put it in a USB
enclosure and mount it on another computer to extract your data.

I would certainly concentrate on getting a backup (or two!) before
experimenting with re-installs.
