Wait until the mirrors are up again or chose other mirrors and I heard
of a "mirror method", apt-get then automatically selects a good mirror
based on your location.

What mirror do you use? Take a look at /etc/apt/sources.list and
perhaps you could spend 1/4 of the time you needed to write a request to
the list, by taking a look at https://askubuntu.com, resp. searching for
a solution with https://startpage.com/.

Perhaps this automation by the synaptic GUI is supported for your
Ubuntu release too:
