well, if there would be anything CD related in that dir the apt-get
update call would have failed, there is obviously no trace of the CD in
there, this sounds like either a CD creator bug messing up the installed
system somehow or it is update-manager itself  that does something wrong
here ... 

filing a bug is in order here for sure ... 

wade: did you reboot the machine since you created the mate image ?
perhaps there is a dangling mountpoint for the iso in /media/cdrom ...
