fully transparent windows problem

This is a serious problem that has plagued me for a few years, through a
number
of ubuntu versions. The past year the problem was limited to a program
called tkdiff , but now I'm confronted with gimp as well doing this.
The problem is that a new window comes up completely transparent. I have
to kill it and try again. Sometimes several times. Very frustrating.
Embarassing
in demos.
The problem goes away if I reboot, suggesting it's a memory leak of sorts.
Wondering if anybody has seen this before. This is on a Thinkpad T530
laptop,
and with U15.04. I have a desktop with "similar" setup, and it doesn't
exhibit
this (in all fairness, I don't use the crap out of that one compared to
the laptop)
