Thank you for your reply Tom,

I've forgotten the details now, but one was to start the network manager 
which as I said I had already tried. However, what I hadn't tried until 
this morning after a good night's sleep was to restart the network 
manger (instead of start) which worked.

I also discovered that a bash script stored in /etc/pm/sleep.d will be 
launched at wakeup time.
