This *sounds* a lot like a hardware problem, but it's hard to know for
sure without closer inspection :) I don't know if this will be helpful,
but I have a couple of suggestions. Have you tried to look for a newer
version of the BIOS on ASUS' web pages? There is a beta version from
2005/06/28 - maybe you could try that. Also, try running memtest on the
newest RAM sticks, if it fails, try another pair. If you can, try
tunning memtest on the same sticks in another machine to get an idea of
whether it is the sticks themselves or something on the motherboard.

It's odd that the disks don't show up in the BIOS settings except if
you use the RAID setting, and I wouldn't want to use that, I think.
