If the problem persists with the older kernel, then it seems that the 
kernel upgrade was not the cause.

If you cycled power several times then successfully printed a test page, 
I begin to suspect a hardware problem.

If it were me, at this point I would want to be running some self-test 
pages (without the computer).  But that's more challenging on this 
1020.  You have to remove some covers and then jump a couple pins, as at
