That may have been true many moons ago (I can't remember) but it is
definitely not true now.

NetworkManager and /etc/network/interfaces co-exist quite happily.
NetworkManager simply ignores any interfaces that are mentioned
in /etc/network/interfaces. It does NOT write into the file or overwrite
it.
