Ubuntu 12.04 changed itself to xubuntu and stopped working

OK, this is good. The kernel and most of the rest of the system is
still up. It also means you have a working console to determine what
causes the problem.

Of course. Did you expect anything else?

That is when X and the display manager starts, so I would begin by
examining their log files.
