X2go is great. Performance is very good, and using the clipboard between
Windows and Ubuntu just works.

However, I've only tried it with a Windows client connecting to x2go-server,
which was installed on Ubuntu Server running the Mate Desktop.

I used to love vnc4server, but then switched to xrdp because it was easier
to install, and because rdp works better for me.

And I really liked the end-results of the scripts from Scary Gliders. Their
clipboard transfers works pretty good, and storage for the clipboard adapts
to the host environment like magic. I still wish I knew how they did that.

Anyway, x2go is the best by far, IMO. Easiest to install, fastest, and
stuff works the way it should. And it appears to be a trusted project.

One problem though, x2go has the same problem that vnc4server and xrdp have:
they require a 2D desktop.

I use Ubuntu Server because I don't need Bluetooth and LibreOffice and all
the rest, and I'm forced to use the Mate Desktop to use as a remote desktop.
(Not that I'm saying Mate is bad - it's a great desktop.)

Sadly , since Unity went 3D only, I've had to leave Unity behind. And I
liked Unity.

By the way, after following some of the advice given here in this
discussion, I've come the closest ever to getting vnc4server working with
Unity.

It was far from a fully functioning, or even a well-functioning desktop, but
it gave me hope and something to do for an hour.
