If your backups are not up to date then first you can boot off a live
Ubuntu DVD/USB and should be able to access the disk from there,
provided it is not completely bad.  Do not write anything to the disk
until you have got everything off that you need.  That is important if
you fear the disk may be faulty or damaged.
