You're right. When I change the file type options, the changes are
written to the file "~/.local/share/applications/gedit.desktop".
Therefore the changes should also affect nautilus.
If you want to change the settings like I described, you could install
konqueror - if you don't mind installing lots of KDE libraries. OTOH,
there are several lines in the .desktop file which I can't see with the
KDE GUI, so editing the file directly may give you more freedom.
