CD players not working

Try to rip one track from the CD, this would tell you if the burner(s) can
read the CD, and then try to listen to the file. If I remember correctly,
can use Audacity for this.

If that works, then maybe try one of those big media players/managers like
banshee, or others (you can search in Synaptic and choose one you might
like). Hopefully they will be able to play your disks.
