Mostly working with CentOS but Ubuntu Server did the same. The
accessory packages of the additions install; the main installed fell
over badly & repeatedly on CentOS. It was expecting files in wrong
locations, sorted with symlinks; then expecting files with different
names [e.g. wanting a dot where there's an underscore], sorted by
editing the install script.

Then it fell over due to being unable to create or find a virtual device node.

So the VM went without working extensions, which was actually mainly a
cosmetic issue.
