Automount for flash drives now failing in 14.04

And the latest on my home desktop (I've been away all weekend...):

I inserted the drive (which also mounts just fine on my laptop), and
no notice appeared announcing the drive, but there was also no error
in the syslog:

Only when I run Thunar and access the drive does it finally appear.

It behaves exactly the same way for my 32GB SanDisk cruzer - no
notification, no mount until I go into Thunar and access the drive.
THEN it mounts:
