PS: Or do you just dislike the desktop of the DE you're using? Several file managers allow to run as a desktop. I don't use a desktop and I don't use a virtual file system. For a wallpaper e.g. feh comes to mind. For a wallpaper + desktop try e.g. spacefm --desktop or rodent-desk.
