no I haven't looked at it.

'"deb" - make a package from an existing deb'
( https://github.com/jordansissel/fpm/wiki ) sounds promising, since I
like to know how to automatically split the source from upstream into
the packages, following the Debian/Ubuntu policies.

Later today I likely will give it a go.

Building fpm comes with a chicken egg causality dilemma :D.

The request is sent to the devel discussion list too. It already
came through the list, but isn't in the archive yet.
